How has being a woman playing sports affected your life?
Sports have been an omnipresent part of my life for as long as I can remember. As I think about what has made me the person I am today and where I learned the lessons that shaped me, it’s hard not to attribute almost all of it, at least in part, to my time spent in sports. Discipline, resilience, disappointment, effort, leadership, failure, compromise, success, joy, dedication, confidence, time management... the list goes on and on. Sports also taught me, as a girl, that I could do anything the boys did.
I played in Dillon Basketball League at Princeton University as one of just two girls on the team until high school. I was on a Little League baseball team, again as one of just two girls, through middle school. And I also went on to play basketball and soccer in high school and then soccer in college with amazing groups of women. Now, as the mom of two boys, I get to experience youth sports all over again. As a parent, I love to watch them play. I love being a mom, coaching my sons. And I love to see other women step out of the stands and onto the field. Hooray for girls and women in sports!
